Hello Amy
My name is Sarah, I am 29, from South Africa, and am studying Visual and Media Anthropology in Berlin.
I heard about your film ‘The edge of dreaming’ from my lecturer who attended one of your workshops. I am in the process of trying to watch the film, I joined LoveFilm in Germany but it is not on their databases, so I tried to join LoveFilm UK but, oh, it’s a long story, my purse was stolen with my visa card, anyway, I’m sorting this out and am dying to watch the film and will be able to watch it this week.
The reason why I am writing to you is because I am writing an essay about another documentary film ‘Sans Soleil’ by Chris Marker, I’m sure you know of it. I was inspired to write about this film based on what my lecturer told me about your film/workshop; she briefly explained that a lot of what it is about is activating or understanding the right side of the brain.
Now I would like very much to know more about this, as I would like to write about ‘Sans Soleil’ from an angle of the film being a sensorial experience, a film that steers away from the usual left brain narrative structure, and instead, communicates with the right side of the brain, using cinematic techniques to inspire experiences and sensations, and to communicate ‘meaning’ through this method. Therefore, in my opinion, I think that the film communicates with a different part of the brain to that which is usually exercised during traditional documentary film making.
Hence my eagerness to watch your film!
Now, my question is, could you be so kind to recommend to me some authors/film-makers whose work I can read/watch to find out more about this subject as I feel like I am heading far away from Anthropology and entering the world of Neurology or Biology and I have no idea where to start, I just feel swamped.
And have you published any papers of which I can read?
Looking forward to watching The Edge of Dreamin,g and Stem Cell Research also looks fascinating. My couzin’s have Usher Sydrome and are going blind so I am very interested in what you have covered in this film.
Thank you very very much for your time
Best wishes
Sarah Scott
